Some of the Great Guitars I have had.
1955
Gibson Les Paul Goldtop.
This guitar was a joy to play. I think Marty Wilde
still has this guitar.
It belonged to Sister Roseta Tharp in the 50's.
1955 Gibson
Les Paul Goldtop.
Marty Playing my Goldtop. Les Paul on 'Oh Boy' 1958.
1958 Gibson ES345 Cherry Red with Bigby & Stereo Pickups.
This was another great instrument. I unfortunately sold it for £200 in 1965. I think Johnny Halidays guitarist bought it.
1957
Maton Cello.
I used this guitar on records with Sarah Vaughn, Sammy Davis jnr. I did a lot of work with arranger Johnny Keating and his big band. The style I used was a bit like Freddie Green with Count Basie. I loved this guitar and had it for 20 years before I exchanged it for my Howard Roberts jazz guitar.
1966
Rickenbacker.
This Red Ricky is the one I used on later sessions and with Tom Jones. I actualy endorsed Rickenbacker during the late 60's and early 70's. This group was on the first tour with Tom in 1969. The lineup is me on the left then John Rostil (Ex Shadows Bassist), Backstage Manager at the Copacabanna club New York and Criss Slade the onlymusician left over from Tom's original group.
1970
Rickenbacker.
I used this Guitar with Tom Jones live performances. Sometimes I would use a Telecaster but htis blonde Ricky and the red one I use most of all.
Guitars I use today
1992
Patrick Eggle 'Big Jim Sullivan Legend Model'.
I still use this guitar because it is the most versatile guitar I have ever had. I need a guitar that will enable me to play Jazz, Country, Rock, Blues etc. I use 00.11 to 00.48 strings and the action is low. This string set up give a fatter sound for Jazz but still enables me to bend the strings a minor third or a major second with ease. I fitted an Axon AX100 SB guitar to midi controller, which gives me a choice of 400 or more sounds to plat with. There are no delays when playing this converter as the touch string recognition algorithm enables you to hear exactly what you play. When I'm playing Jazz I can use vibes and guitar in unison and it sounds great.
Howard
Roberts Jazz Guitar.
This guitar has the feel of a 50' Jazz guitar. I love this guitar and I have had it for 28 years.
Takamini
Acoustic.
This guitar also has a lovely feel to it. It has the low action and feel of my Eggle guitar so I can do the same things acoustically as I can with the electric. I am going to fit the Axon pickup to this guitar so I will have all those sounds available with the accoustic guitar.
